This episode is not attested to in the Gospels. However, three incidents are recorded that would lead to mental, physical and emotional exhaustion, the third of which is as follows:<\/p>\n

Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the governor\u2019s headquarters, and they gathered the whole cohort around him. They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, and after twisting some thorns into a crown, they put it on his head. They put a reed in his right hand and knelt before him and mocked him, saying, \u2018Hail, King of the Jews!\u2019 They spat on him, and took the reed and struck him on the head. After mocking him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him. (Matthew<\/a>)<\/p>\n

Then the soldiers led him into the courtyard of the palace (that is, the governor\u2019s headquarters); and they called together the whole cohort. And they clothed him in a purple cloak; and after twisting some thorns into a crown, they put it on him. And they began saluting him, \u2018Hail, King of the Jews!\u2019 They struck his head with a reed, spat upon him, and knelt down in homage to him. After mocking him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him. (Mark<\/a>)<\/p>\n

Now the men who were holding Jesus began to mock him and beat him; they also blindfolded him and kept asking him, \u2018Prophesy! Who is it that struck you?\u2019 They kept heaping many other insults on him. (Luke<\/a>)<\/p>\n
